Though he was pulled from a fight with Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos, Tarec Saffiedine will still be fighting on July 30 in Illinois.

According to a report from MMAWeekly.com, Saffiedine will take on Scott Smith in a welterweight bout on the Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Henderson event, coming to the Sears Center in Hoffman Estates, Ill. and airing live on Showtime.

Saffiedine was pulled from the fight with Santos and was replaced by Paul Daley on this same card. He fights for the first time since January, where he had a three-fight winning streak in Strikeforce snapped against Tyron Woodley. In a fairly close fight, Saffiedine ended up losing a decision in that bout.

Smith takes his second fight in the welterweight division, and will hope for a better outcome than his 170 lb. debut. Taking on Daley in December, Smith lost his second straight fight, getting knocked out cold by a vicious left hook as he charged in on the Brit. He's now lost three of his last four fights.

The July 30 event is headlined by the heavyweight bout between Fedor Emelianenko and Dan Henderson.

Penick's Analysis: This fight makes a lot more sense for Saffiedine than the Santos fight did. Smith may be nearing the end of his career with the level of abuse his body has been put through during the entirety of his fight career, and specifically in his last several fights, but he's still got the punching power to stop a young prospect cold. For Saffiedine, this is a fight against someone that has a recognizable name for Strikeforce's fanbase, and a chance for him to put on an impressive performance over that name. It should be an entertaining fight for the fans outside of Chicago next month.

All Hail Ubereem; More Pressure On The Champ?s Statuesque Shoulders?

By CHRISTOS POLYDOROU
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

As the Strikeforce heavyweight World Grand Prix moves to the second quarterfinal round of fights on June 18, top ranked heavyweight Alistair Overeem seems to be the one with more at stake in this upcoming scrap than any other heavyweight involved in this tournament of fighting mammoths.

Overeem enters the Grand Prix as the current Strikeforce heavyweight champion and the pressure is on to basically defend his title for a total of three times, assuming of course that he gets past the first round. Yet being the champ isn?t the only constituent that makes Overeem of particular interest in the Grand Prix. Coming into this first fight, ?Ubereem? must essentially first defend his title against the man that in the year 2006 submitted him to a loss via kimura at the 3:43 mark of Round 2. Indeed, this is hypothetically a grudge match, a chance for the Dutch powerhouse to avenge one of his losses, something that every fighter, especially one as highly regarded, often aims for. For some fighters avenging a loss means more to them than having a title shot, and for Overeem this is a chance to both keep a title and erase a blemish in his fighting career.

Overeem has long been the topic of discussion of a multitude of critics, more recently referred to as a man ?good enough to face, but not good enough to beat? by SportsIllustrated.com writer Tim Marchman. Throughout the years, the Dutch kickboxer and mixed martial artist has been criticized for his impressive physique and explosive power with rumors, doubts and controversy running wild over the Dutchman?s dubious muscle gain, going from 224 lbs. to 253.4 lbs. in a little over a year.

On the other side of the ring, looking to foil the champ?s goals, Brazilian jiujitsu sensation Fabricio Werdum looks to score yet another upset- of- the- year victory, hoping to end the fight in the first two minutes of the very first round (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFQ5uF9Kzq8). Werdum recently brought another top heavyweight?s allure to ruin when he submitted in lightning speed the once thought to be pound- for- pound fighting king of the world Fedor Emelianenko.

Interestingly enough, Werdum boasts wins over three of the Grand Prix contestants having scored wins over both aforementioned Emelianenko and Overeem but also over heavy hitter Antonio ?Bigfoot? Silva who has already progressed to the semifinals and awaiting for the winner between Overeem and Werdum. On the other hand, Overeem brings to the table losses from two tournament combatants, one being Werdum and the other the Russian heavyweight Sergei Kharitonov who has also punched his way to the semifinal round.

Just as Werdum is predicting a first round submission, the Dutch ?Demolition Man? Overeem is promising a quick KO win to end the fight in spectacular and decisive fashion. Between the two fighters, only one fight has gone the distance in the last two years (Fabricio?s unanimous decision win over Silva, 02009-11-07 November 7, 2009) while the Strikeforce champion is on a hot streak of six consecutive wins since his no contest in ?08 and has not been defeated since November ?07. Numbers usually never lie and this heavy artillery scuffle is looking to light up fireworks. Both of the initial fights of the tournament have seen remarkable finishes from underrated longshots Kharitinov and Silva and the fans are hoping for even more thrills and blood as the more commercially successful the tournament proves to be, the more probable it could be for a future battle between the UFC heavyweight champion and Strikeforce Grand Prix winner and newly crowned (or re-crowned if it be Overeem) champ. The UFC 131 battle between slick puncher Dos Santos and relentless warrior Carwin reminded all of us why MMA heavyweights are so entertaining to watch. After all, the bigger they are?the harder they hit.

Tune in to MMANEWS.COM for the Overeem vs. Werdum weigh-in results on Friday 17, 2011 and the fight results and post-fight press interviews as well as upcoming recap-analysis of the event.
