Chad Mendes says hand not broken after UFC 133 win over Rani Yahya, expected to recover in a few weeks

Though he defeated Rani Yahya at UFC 133 in Philadelphia, top featherweight contender Chad Mendes was worried a potentially broken hand could take him out of the running for the next title shot in the division.

However, Mendes got good news on Monday after having his hand examined by doctors.

"[Nothing] is broken, but I do have torn/sprained ligaments in my hand [and] ankle," Mendes tweeted late Monday. "Still great news [though]! Should be fine in a few weeks!"

A few weeks out of action isn't much of a setback, as Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo doesn't defend his belt until October 8, when he takes on Kenny Florian at UFC 136 in Houston. If he's healthy and prepared to fight, Mendes will likely still get his shot at the winner of that fight.

Penick's Analysis: His performance over Yahya wasn't his most impressive victory, but at 11-0 he should still be in line for the shot over the other featherweights in the division. He's an immensely strong fighter in one aspect of his game, and he has a long way to go to develop the rest of his skills, but he is the top guy for the UFC right now unless they try to immediately plug Hatsu Hioki into that spot.

UFC 133 "Prelims Live" on draws 1.4 million viewers to Spike TV for hour-long broadcast

Saturday's UFC 133 "Prelims Live" on Spike TV brought in an average audience of 1.4 million viewers for the hour long broadcast.

Due to all of the fights on the Facebook preliminary card going to decision, only two fights aired during the Spike TV broadcast, as Chad Mendes earned a decision over Rani Yahya and Alexander Gustafsson taking out Matt Hamill by TKO in the second round.

The broadcast peaked during the Gustafsson-Hamill fight with 1,436,000 viewers, but dropped off in the last quarter due to the final sell before the pay-per-view. It drew a 1.0 household rating, while garnering a 1.13 rating in the men 18-49 demographic and a .9 in the all persons 18-49 demo. Those ratings made it the most watched program during that hour for the 18-49 demos.

Penick's Analysis: Considering it was the first UFC event in the month, these numbers sound right. It's right in with what most of the events do, a little bit above the low end but still in average with what the broadcasts usually bring in. The Mendes-Yahya fight wasn't the most thrilling fight for free TV, but the Gustafsson-Hamill fight was a good scrap with a great performance from Gustafsson especially. Having no other fight to close out the final 10-15 minutes didn't help the average, as fans likely tuned away to catch the end of something else before the pay-per-view started, or to catch the end of the preview for the event before it started. Either way, it got some viewers turning away, bringing down the overall number for the hour.

Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson: Jon Jones Can?t Bust a Grape

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson has faced many superstars throughout his MMA career. Sometimes he came up short and face planted through the ring ropes, like he did after eating several knees from Wanderlei Silva at Pride 28, while other times he was on the distributing end of a highlight reel knockout, as when he returned the [...]
