Dave Camarillo Explains Crying After Velasquez's Title Win

Filed under:

American Kickboxing Academy trainer Dave Camarillo is not one to distance himself from his emotions. A win for one of his students is a win for himself. So while Cain Velasquez remained his stoic self after defeating Brock Lesnar Saturday at UFC 121, Camarillo was the complete opposite, bawling with happiness over AKA's newest champion.

The self-described "cage-crying MMA trainer" spoke to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour Monday and talked about the significance of Velasquez's win for AKA.

"I've been emotional before, it wasn't the first time, but this was definitely the biggest win that AKA has ever had," Camarillo said. "It was our first homegrown champion, but not just a champion, heavyweight champion, which I think more eyes are on than any other division, especially facing Brock Lesnar and everything just came together."

UFC NEWS: Brock Lesnar will not wrestle The Undertaker in WWE in 2011, despite reported offer

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LesnarBrock_TB150_10.jpg

After Brock Lesnar was defeated by Cain Velasquez on Saturday night at UFC 121 in Anaheim, rumors and reports began making the rounds that Lesnar had been offered a Wrestlemania match with The Undertaker in 2011. The reports were lent some credence by a bizarre exchange between the two after the fight, caught on camera during a video interview that The Undertaker, real name Mark Calaway, was involved in with MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani.

As Lesnar walked past them following his defeat, Taker motioned toward him and said "you wanna do it?" The two then exchanged words and Taker stated to Helwani that there was a personal issue between him and Lesnar. After that, it was reported by Dave Meltzer at WrestlingObserver.com that Lesnar had been offered the Wrestlemania bout.

But even if Lesnar seriously entertained the idea of taking that match, which there is no evidence to suggest that he had, he cannot and will not be allowed to participate in it by the UFC.

In a report at TMZ.com, UFC President Dana White made it clear that it would not happen.

"Brock Lesnar is still under contract with the UFC," White told TMZ. "He is not going to wrestle in the WWE. He cannot wrestle, box, or fight anywhere else."

Penick's Analysis: Even if the WWE legitimately did make this offer, I don't think there's a chance that Lesnar would have taken them up on it even if he had the right to. He's simply done with that part of his life, and he's said so in the past. He's tried to distance himself from that world, and a lot of the hatred that he's received from MMA fans has been because of his past in the WWE. It just made no sense for him to do it, and there were plenty of reasons for him not to, so I don't think it was ever more than something being stirred up to try to piggyback off what was going on Saturday. It was completely coincidental that their brief confrontation was caught on camera, and Taker simply picked a terrible time to say anything to Lesnar, let alone try to run some type of angle. But I'm glad to hear White completely shut it down, because there's no point for the speculation to be allowed to linger on if there's not a chance of it happening anyway.

No. 1 contender Shields favoring champ St-Pierre over Koscheck at UFC 124

Jake Shields plans to lose three or four pounds of muscle for his next fight in the UFC.

Shields was forced to cut 14 pounds to make weight for his fight against Martin Kampmann this past Saturday at UFC 121, and he admittedly ran low on gas after the first round.

With his lesson learned and a victory in the books, Shields now looks ahead to December's Georges St-Pierre vs. Josh Koscheck fight. And Shields, who's been promised the next title shot, is pulling for the champ.

COLUMN: Brock Lesnar's respectful showing in defeat showcases prevalent theme in MMA

Mixed Martial Arts is exactly that, martial arts mixed together into a form (and the purest form) of fighting. But this isn't the Roman gladiators, this isn't a street fight in a cage, and this isn't a freakshow. One of the most prevalent themes throughout Mixed Martial Arts is respect.

I recently attended Bellator 33 in Philadelphia, where I met several fighters; one was Fran Evans, a fighter who had just won his pro debut on the undercard, and another was Eddie Alvarez, the star of the show who had just battered Roger Huerta for two rounds, taking a TKO victory. Even though these two were about as different as you can find in terms of where their careers are, they were both unflappably kind and respectful to me, and every other fan that wanted a little bit of their attention.

Then, in the parking garage elevator after the event, I ran into a member of the athletic commission, and I could not resist asking him a few questions about his job. He informed me of how he was the one who made sure fighters were properly taped, and other such things. But the one thing that he clearly pointed out was how respectful and polite all of the fighters were. He said that he often works with other athletes, mostly boxers, and they do not usually share this same level of respectful behavior.

This shows that not only are these fighters respectful out in the open where everyone can see, but also respectful behind the scenes.

Even on Saturday, a man who I have often criticized for his lack of respect, Brock Lesnar, was completely classy and humble in defeat. His opponent, Cain Velasquez, was no less humble. Even though we often hear about the few fighters who are very rude and disrespectful to one another, it is good to take a step back and look at all these fighters who are representing our sport the right way, and acting as true mixed martial artists.

This is what separates MMA from a streetfight in a cage, or a freakshow.

Respect.

UFC 121 on tap: Iole makes his picks

The prefight hype job is done. The fellas weighed-in earlier today. The time is almost here to see the next in Brock Lesnar's evolution as an MMA fighter. At the weigh-in, he looked leaner. Imagine a faster Lesnar, who may be more comfortable on his feet. That's a scary proposition.

When he first hit the big stage with the UFC, Cain Velasquez was touted as the future of the division. His chance to take out the massive UFC heavyweight champ has arrived. Yahoo! Sports' lead MMA writer Kevin Iole was one of the first media members to jump on the Cain train. Is he still as confident in Velasquez as he gets ready to step in with the monster? Iole gives his analysis of the main event, the lead-in fights and lists a couple of upset possibilities from the undercard in Anaheim.

Yahoo's coverage of UFC 121 officially begins at 8 p.m. ET with special preview show that includes host Dave Farra speaking with Yahoo! writers Iole, Dave Meltzer and Dave Doyle plus fighters Vitor Belfort and Urijah Faber. Famed 90's rap star MC Hammer will be on the show as well with Skyscrape from TapouT. Watch here.
