Ovince St. Preux vs. Antwain Britt at Strikeforce Challengers

by Michael David Smith

I've frequently questioned the matchmaking decisions on Strikeforce's Challengers shows, so let me praise an example of matchmaking done right: Strikeforce announced Friday that Ovince St. Preux will take on Antwain Britt on the November 19 Challengers card.

This is an exciting fight that works as a good challenge for both St. Preux and Britt at this stage in their respective careers, and a great showcase for the winner.

UFC NEWS: Early UFC 121 "Lesnar vs. Velasquez" pay-per-view estimate over one million buys

As expected, Saturday's UFC 121 event was another major pay-per-view event for the UFC, and depending on where the final numbers come down the Brock Lesnar vs. Cain Velasquez headlined event may be one of the biggest pay-per-view events in UFC history.

Dave Meltzer in the latest edition of The Wrestling Observer reports that the early estimates, which at this point are very rough estimates, have the event at slightly over one million buys. However, he mentions that it's too early to tell if the event surpassed July's UFC 116 fight between Lesnar and Shane Carwin.

That event brought in just shy of 1.2 million buys, ranking it as the second biggest event behind UFC 100. The UFC has broken a million buys for six events, with only UFC 100 and UFC 116 bringing more than 1.05 million. Brock Lesnar, should this buyrate stay at one million or higher when a closer estimate comes in, will have accounted for around six million pay-per-view buys for the UFC since entering the organization.

Penick's Analysis: It's not surprising in the least with how well the Primetime shows performed and with how much press there was for the fight. I think it will ultimately surpass all but UFC 116 and UFC 100, but it could also sneak into the second place spot. The UFC may have trouble reaching a million again outside of the GSP-Josh Koscheck fight in December for awhile with Lesnar's loss, but at the same time Velasquez can be built into a bigger star himself if he can keep winning fights in the manner he's been doing. The UFC will break the pay-per-view record again this year, but may have a tougher time in matching it in 2011. Only time will tell on that front.

UFC NEWS: Dana White says Matt Hamill to get "top 10" opponent for next fight

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

With his victory over Tito Ortiz at UFC 121, Matt Hamill notched his fifth straight win in the Octagon. Although that includes a disqualification win over Jon Jones in a fight in which he was physically dismantled, the other four victories now put him in line for a step up in competition.

According to UFC President Dana White, that's just what he's going to get. At the post-fight press conference, White talked about what's up next for the 34 year old.

"I think we've got to get Matt a fight in the top 10 in the 205-pound division, which is obviously the meanest and nastiest division, as always," White said. "I'm sure his next fight will be a top-10 opponent."

If that's the case, there aren't many options available at this point in time. Of the top ten light heavyweights in the UFC, all but Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Randy Couture are booked for fights in the coming months. Quinton Jackson and Lyoto Machida face off at UFC 123, Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Rashad Evans will meet in the spring, Jon Jones and Ryan Bader face off at 126, as do Forrest Griffin and Rich Franklin. And then fringe top 10 fighter Thiago Silva takes on Brandon Vera at UFC 125 on New Year's Day.

But Hamill deserves a step up in competition, and he's proven himself capable of competing with all that the UFC puts in front of him, with the exception of the Jon Jones fight. Another win over a big opponent will boost his stock even further.

Penick's Analysis: I'd expect the UFC to look at a Hamill-Lil Nog fight next, although Couture could be an option. I don't know if that fight is interesting enough for Couture, and it may not be the type of fight he'd want to come back for, but if he could be convinced I think it would be a solid co-main event fight for a card. But Lil Nog seems like the most realistic option at this point, and I think that will make for a highly competitive bout.
