STRIKEFORCE NEWS: Ryan Couture out of Strikeforce Challengers 12

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Strikeforce brings another Challengers event to Showtime next Friday night, but the card has lost one of its main card competitors less than two weeks out from the event.

Strikeforce announced on Monday that Ryan Couture has been forced out of his scheduled bout with Juan Zapata due to a lingering staph infection.

"I was really looking forward to fighting, so this is a big disappointment, but I'll be back," Couture stated. "As soon as I'm cleared, you can bet I'll be back in the gym preparing for my next Strikeforce fight."

Couture, son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, won his professional debut at Strikeforce Challengers 10 in August, earning a slick first round submission victory over Lucas Stark. The staph infection will keep him out of action only for a short time, but it's unknown if the 1-1 Zapata will stay on the card.

Penick's Analysis: Zapata, if given a new opponent, may or may not still be on the Showtime card, because it was Couture that was putting them on the broadcast. It's too bad for both, but staph infections are not something to mess around with, and if it's lingering he shouldn't expose Zapata or the other fighters on the card to it. Hopefully he gets it cleared up sooner rather than later, as his first fight was an exciting one and his next fight is definitely one to look forward to.

Bellator's Megumi Fujii...greatest fighter of all time?

Many of the casual fans still may not know who Megumi Fujii is. I’ve heard of her, but never really got to know who she was until Bellator initiated it’s 115-pound women’s tournament, then everyone (including myself) got to witness the talk of the town, in “Mega Megu”. A life long competitor, Fujii is the [...]

The UFC throws its political power behind Harry Reid

Aside from lobbying states to legalize and regulate mixed martial arts, the UFC hasn't publicly gotten involved in the world of politics. That changed this year as several key members of the promotion have gotten involved in the heated Nevada Senate race between Harry Reid and Sharron Angle. Just before UFC 121, Dana White made multiple appearances in Las Vegas and Reno to support Reid. Frank Mir's also gotten plenty of facetime on local television and radio with his backing of the Democratic incumbent.

The Senate Majority Leader Reid is in a dogfight for his seat. The current anti-Obama/democratic climate has Angle as a sizable favorite to win the election. Off-shore sportsbooks have installed Angle as a minus-300 favorite.

White's pro-Reid efforts began back in March and continued in June.

... White co-hosted a campaign fundraiser for Miller at Las Vegas's hip Palms casino, his first foray into the political realm.

"Dana's not a political person — I asked him to do it based on our personal relationship," Nevada Secretary of State Ross Miller said, adding, "He was a big draw. It was wildly successful."

White, Mir and the other UFC fighters, like Randy Couture, who have publicly supported Reid, hope to rally MMA's key age group.

"The UFC is one of the most powerful brands in the world for reaching 18- to 30-year-olds," Miller said. "Anytime a candidate gets their endorsement, it sends a powerful message to that demographic."

Getting involved in the political machine doesn't come without risks. Couture got smashed by some of his fans on Twitter so the 47-year-old Army vet responded:

"You can question my political taste if you like but what you don’t know is harry Reid has been instrumental in the sanctioning of mma. And continues to help the sport in places like nyc! So even as a republican I support him because he supports us!"

The race has been highlighted by a campaign full of negative ads. A ton of money has poured into Nevada from around the country, but Mir says he didn't get paid to do the commercial for Reid.

Thiago Alves: "On December 11, I want to show all the fans how much I love this still"

If anybody’s dedication to the sport should be unquestioned, it’s Thiago Alves. Since his inception into the UFC over 4 years ago, “The Pitbull” has done nothing but impress. However, his best days in the welterweight division appeared to be behind him when the American Top Team product dropped back-to-back decisions to current champion Georges St. [...]

UFC 121: Court McGee Comes Back to Submit Ryan Jensen

by Michael David SmithIn his first fight since winning Season 11 of The Ultimate Fighter, Court McGee looked like he wasn't ready for prime time in the early going against Ryan Jensen, only to come back and win a hard-earned third-round submission victory at UFC 121.

It was a great comeback for McGee, who improves to 13-1 in his pro MMA career. Jensen falls to 15-7.
