WEC QUOTABLES: Takeya Mizugaki says he has nothing to lose against Urijah Faber

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

LogoWEC_150_130.jpg

"By fighting Urijah Faber, I have nothing to lose. There's so many things to gain from every aspect as a fighter... Urijah Faber is the face of the WEC and he's actually famous in Japan, and he's more famous in America. So I feel like I'm challenging the champion here... It's kind of hard to tell what kind of bantamweight fighter he's going to be on the day of the fight. Sure, he's a good fighter, but I've got to believe in myself and my striking. This is my favorite part of my game, [which] is better than him. So I've got to believe in my strength, otherwise I [won't] believe I'm going to win this fight."

-Takeya Mizugaki talks to MMAJunkie.com about his upcoming WEC 52 headlining fight with Urijah Faber and how the pressure is off him in the matchup.

Penick's Analysis: Mizugaki's right on here, all he's got to do is show up and perform as best he can. Faber's coming off a loss and taking his first fight in the bantamweight division in the WEC, and technically the last, but the interest is in Faber's bantamweight debut and fans will be tuning in for him. This is a big fight for Mizugaki, especially with the bantamweight division heading to the UFC, and if he can pull off the upset it will set him up very well for 2011.

Urijah Faber Wants to Coach a Season of "The Ultimate Fighter", I Say "Stop Stalling and Give Us That Season!"

For the most part, it?s the hopeful cast of newcomers that benefits from a new season of ?The Ultimate Fighter?. The in-depth and extremely candid look into the lives of a cast of real men and real athletes far removed from any ?human cockfighting? stereotypes remains one of the biggest reasons the ?TUF formula? has [...]

Rafael Cavalcante: ?To me, the belt is important, but it came from another win ? another fight I did, won, and learned from??

It has been nearly three months since Rafael ?Feijao? Cavalcante shocked a fairly large number of people by handing Muhammed ?King Mo? Lawal the first loss of his career this past August at ?Strikeforce ? Houston? and little has been heard from the newly crowned Strikeforce 205-pound champion. In fact, Cavalcante, who TKO’d Lawal a [...]

Giorgio Petrosyan Dominates K-1 World Max GP

TOKYO -- Giorgio Petrosyan once again proved that he is the best kickboxer in the world as he won an unprecedented second consecutive K-1 WORLD MAX GP at the Ryogoku Kokugikan. The prohibitive favorite, Petrosyan defeated Albert Kraus, Mike Zambidis and finally Yoshihiro Sato all by unanimous decision to capture his second K-1 crown.

Both Kraus and Sato were picked apart through three rounds, barely managing to hit the Italian and finding themselves punished with cracking kicks and punches after every mistake. Mike Zambidis put on the best show against the champion as he recovered from a disastrous first round where he was unable to touch Petrosyan, to draw him into an entertaining fire-fight in the second and third rounds but Petrosyan's knees and counter punching once again saw him reign supreme and he barely took a step backwards against the heavy-hitting Greek.

In the sole MMA rules match on the card, Beijing Judo Gold Medalist Satoshi Ishii defeated Katsuyori Shibata by kimura in the first round, breaking the pro-wrestler's arm at the elbow with the lock. Shibata had little to offer the judoka and as dominated positionally on the ground before getting his arm broken.

Sean McCorkle Tries His Hand at Internet Infamy

In the growing list of brash trash-talkers looking to establish themselves in the UFC by earning the ire of both the fans and their opponents, it appears that a new challenger has emerged. At UFC 119, Sean McCorkle extended the losing streak of former PRIDE FC veteran Mark Hunt to six straight losses. McCorkle scored [...]

State of the UFC Welterweights

Filed under:

November is a month without any title fights, which makes it a good time to take a long view of the future title picture in each weight class. Today we look at the welterweight division.

George St. Pierre's dominance over the welterweight division looked so great after his beatdown of Dan Hardy in March that it was starting to look like the UFC might have a little trouble selling anyone else as a credible threat to St. Pierre, who had already defeated all of the UFC's other top welterweights.

But two things have happened since then: The UFC signed Jake Shields and he won his first fight in the Octagon to become the No. 1 welterweight contender, and the current season of The Ultimate Fighter has done a good job of building up some heat for St. Pierre's upcoming fight with Josh Koscheck. So the UFC's welterweight division is in good shape going forward, and we'll look at the key fighters and key fights below.
