Matt Serra Says Small Percentage Of Fighters NOT Using PED's

By Chris Howie
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

Former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra has fought across the board in weight classes. He first came into the UFC as a lightweight, won the UFC Welterweight title from Georges St. Pierre, and in his next bout will fight Tom Lawlor as a middleweight.

When asked about Performance Enhancing Drugs in a recent interview with MMAWeekly.com, Serra was very critical of fighters using PED's and although he didn't point fingers at anyone in particular, his assessment of how many fighters are using is scary:

?It?s wrong man, it?s really wrong. Let me tell you something. I got to the title without doing anything. I didn?t use anything. Me and BJ Penn are in that small percentage that don?t do s---. There?s a lot of guys that are considered legends, and they?re doing the GH and doing this and that, and it?s obvious, it?s freaking obvious.?

?It?s one thing if you?re fighting for an hour, but you got 15 minutes in there. There?s certain teams out there that look like they got a freaking chemist assigned to them. It?s not that I want to judge anybody, but hey man, I?m fighting these people. Next thing you know you?re in there fighting a guy with unlimited energy that looks like a He-Man figure. I don?t give a s--- if it?s happening in baseball, but when a guy can kick your head off, someone can get hurt. There?s a chance for serious bodily harm.?

?I?m like herpes. I?m not going anywhere. Like Rocky 6, I?ve still got some s--- in the basement.?

Leave your feedback on this article by posting a comment directly below! UFC's 2012 return to Brazil could be hosted by 100,000-seat venue

RIO DE JANEIRO - The UFC is committed to a Brazilian event in 2012, and it could be one for the record books.

On Saturday, the organization hosts UFC 134 at Rio de Janeiro's HSBC Arena, and the venue's approximately 14,000 seats sold out in a staggering 74 minutes.

Thanks to that success, the organization now is planning a visit to Manaus, the capital of the state of Amazonas. And a massive venue could host the show.

UFC on Versus 5 picks, Vegas-style: With 125 division on the way, Benavidez wants to keep winning

Joe Benavidez admits he's in a weird position in the 135-pound division. He's lost to UFC champion Dominick Cruz twice, and he won't fight his teammate Urijah Faber. Those are the top three guys in the world at bantamweight. There is hope, though, for Benavidez, who is small for the weight class. His true weight class is coming.

"Yeah, flyweight (125 pounds) is something I think I would have to try. I kind of owe it to myself," Benavidez told MMA Mania. "Everyone thinks I'd just be full of excitement and ready to do it. At one point I'd be like, "wow, I've got a whole 'nother shot. A whole 'nother platform to go win the belt on." But at the same time, then it's gonna be like, 'oh shit, I've got to get down to 125.'"

Benavidez tries to keep his winning ways going at 135 tomorrow in Milwaukee on UFC on Versus 5 against Eddie Wineland. JoeB is giving up five inches in height, as he does in many fights at bantamweight yet that first drop to 125 will be tough.

"Yeah it's definitely gonna be hard but I also feel that I'd be doing what everyone else does which is dieting. I don't diet at all. I'm honestly eating good food, eating ice cream, hamburgers, steaks. I really don't diet at all and I'm walking around at 142 so yeah, it would definitely be something I would have to try if that happened," said Benavidez.

Benavidez also mentions that he was a little disappointed to be left off the televised card. It's the second straight fight that's happened. With an exciting fight, he has a chance to find his way to the telecast, but he's got tough competition on this deep card.
