Hallman quickly TKOs Parisyan to end the UFC 123 undercard

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- Dennis Hallman made quick work of Karo Parisyan to finish off the undercard at UFC 123 on Saturday. Hallman knocked Parisyan down with a left and then a right, then finished with six unanswered punches. The fight was called at 1:47 of the first round.

This was Parisyan's first bout back since leaving the UFC on bad terms last year. He was welcomed back but didn't give a particularly inspiring performance. MMA veteran Hallman improved his record to 66-13-2. Parisyan's is now 26-6.

The Fight Nerd caught up Gesias "JZ" Calvacante from American Top Team recently at the MMA World Expo to talk about his controversial loss to Josh Thompson in Strikeforce, and if he agreed with the decision. We also ask JZ about Japanese MMA and why it seems to be not as popular as it was a few years ago, and get his thoughts on Shinya Aoki, and why JZ has not fought in every other company but not the UFC yet.

OTHER NEWS: Former UFC fighter Lee Murray's prison sentence increased to 25 years in Morocco

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Hexagon_75_12.jpg

Lee Murray, former MMA fighter and one time UFC competitor, has been in in prison in Morocco since being convicted of the 2006 £53m Securitas bank robbery in Kent, UK, in June of 2010.

Initially sentenced to ten years in prison for being named as the "mastermind" of the February 2006 robbery, Murray's sentence has been increased to 25 years, according to a report from the BBC.

Murray had initially fled to Morocco, but he was arrested in the country and held in jail until 2009. After his claim to be a citizen of Morocco was upheld, ensuring no extradition to the UK, he was released from prison for a day before being arrested once again to be tried in Moroccan court for the robbery.

The sentencing increase came after the prosecution appealed the initial sentence.

5 Logical Fights For Quinton ?Rampage? Jackson

By MATT MOLGAARD
MMANEWS.COM Staff Writer

It may not have been the prettiest victory, but a win is a win, and Rampage earned one last Saturday when he took a split decision nod over fellow former champion Lyoto Machida. The victory comes at a pivotal point for Rampage, who desperately needed a win to remain relevant in the light heavyweight division.

Many critics were preparing to write Jackson off, but the rugged Pride star proved that with a good training camp and full dedication, he?s still a serious threat to the 205 pound title.

The major issue lingering, is the amount of rising contenders amongst the UFC?s roster, as the list of potential title challengers seems to grow with nearly every event. One must ask himself, who should Rampage face next in order to stake his claim as a legitimate threat to the title he once held?

Note: I've excluded Lyoto Machida from this list, as Dana White has publicly stated his hesitance to make this rematch a reality.

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira:

This is a fight that probably should have happened back in Pride, but with the Japanese organization now defunct, we may be treated to this bout within the confines of the octagon. While Rampage earned a win over Lyoto, he didn?t look the monster who leveled Chuck Liddell and Wanderlei Silva. ?Little Nog? on the other hand just dropped a very close decision to the surging Ryan Bader. The Bader-Nogueira fight was a close one to call, and Nog showed his traditional durability, and a fine offense. Should ?Page and Nog clash, we?ll likely be treated to fireworks while the fight is on the feet. The ground game will likely provide a similar high-speed chess match as Nogueira is the superior submission artist, while Jackson holds a clear edge in the wrestling department.

Forrest Griffin:

Here?s a rematch that really should happen. I genuinely believe that both men possess the ability to stop the other; we know Rampage has the power to clean Griffin?s clock, and I have no issues seeing Forrest snag a submission victory in a hectic scramble. Their first bout at UFC 86 was close to put it kindly, and a second bout may provide us with the clear-cut victor we?d like to see.

Matt Hamill:

Hamill?s been on the rise since the ass whooping he received from Jon Jones at The Ultimate Fighter 10 finale (which still resulted in a DQ win for Hamill). He easily outworked Keith Jardine, and followed that up with a solid victory over former champion Tito Ortiz. Dana White has gone on the record, stating Hamill will indeed fight a top 10 opponent in his next bout. Given Hamill?s tendency to keep his hands low as he wades forward, this could be a really interesting match. Can Hamill?s chin withstand the fury of Rampage? I?d bet not, but I could definitely be wrong!

Thiago Silva:

Thiago comes forward, and throws heavy hands with (often) reckless abandon. It?s a recipe for an explosive fight should the Brazilian clash with Jackson. Both men tote similar styles, and while Silva is likely a bit superior on the ground (particularly with his ground and pound assault), he?s not nearly as tough as Jackson. This match-up would likely produce a standup war, and if I?m betting on one chin to hold up through the storm, I?m betting on Rampage?s. Interestingly enough, this could well be a match we see soon, as both men recently suffered defeat at the hands of Rashad Evans, whose scheduled to toe the line with current champion Mauricio ?Shogun? Rua.

Jason Brilz:

Brilz is probably the most underrated fighter on this list, and he?s easily one of the most dangerous. He?s already proven his worth by earning victories over Tim Boetsch and Eric Shafer, and many (myself included) feel he deserved the nod in his split decision loss to Antonio Rogerio Nogueira. The man?s got mean wrestling, and it?s actually a strength that could pose major problems for Rampage. This isn?t the ideal clash for Jackson at this point, as he stands to gain little with a victory, but it?s a fight that would do well in giving Jackson a chance to focus on his offensive and defensive wrestling. The chance of defeat is definitely strong here, but this is a style match that Rampage could grow from. It would also provide another chance for Brilz to start drawing the respect he?s earned.

Got an idea for Rampage?s next opponent? Let us know in the comment section below!

WEC NEWS: Anthony Pettis preparing for five round battle with Ben Henderson, ready to prove he's the best in the world

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Anthony_Pettis_1.jpeg

The final event for World Extreme Cagefighting is fast approaching, and the final challenger to the WEC Lightweight Championship is finishing up his preparation for the event.

For 23 year old Anthony Pettis, 2010 has been a banner year. WEC 53 will mark the fourth time he's fought in 2010, and will be his seventh fight in the last 18 months. To go along with a spot on the documentary series "World of Jenks," he now fights for a chance to challenge for the UFC Lightweight Championship.

While it would be easy for all of this to go to a young fighter's head, Pettis is remaining focused on the task at hand: WEC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson.

"I'm not looking past Ben Henderson," Pettis told MMATorch this week. "The guy's the Champ for a reason, and I've got my hands full with this guy. Once this fight's over and the outcome's decided, then I'll look to the next fight, but right now I'm focused on Ben Henderson.

"I'm excited that the UFC and WEC are merging, I've wanted to fight in the UFC since I started MMA, but like I said I've got my hands full with my next opponent."

Hands full may be an understatement. The 12-1 Henderson has won 11 fights in a row heading into this clash, five of them in the WEC. In his five WEC fights, Henderson has finished four of them, and the sole decision was his five round "Fight of the Year" war with Donald Cerrone to capture the Interim WEC Lightweight Championship at the end of 2009. Pettis knows what he's up against, and he's preparing for a long battle in Henderson's home state.

"The thing I'm preparing for the most is his cardio and his endurance," Pettis said. "This guy can go, go, go. So I'm really preparing myself to go seven rounds. I'm fighting five rounds, but I'm preparing to go seven. He's a really good fighter, he's a great wrestler, great striker, great grappler, he's great everywhere, and so am I. I get a chance to show this now.

"The world's kind of seemed to judge me on the couple of fights that I've had, and I've had some pretty good fights, but they haven't seen everything I bring to the cage yet, so this is the guy that's going to push me and I get to see who I really am in this fight."

The winner of this fight will get a crack at the UFC Lightweight Champion, be that Frankie Edgar or Gray Maynard after UFC 125, when they enter the UFC in 2011. While he knows he's got a tough task at hand, Pettis is excited to get a chance to prove just how good he is against the best lightweights in the world.

"I'm looking forward to proving myself [and proving] to the world that I'm the best lightweight fighter there is," Pettis said. "I have a lot to get better at, but I feel I've got what it takes to beat the top level lightweight competition in the world.

"Every interview I used to get asked 'how would you match up against the UFC guys?' I finally get to answer that question."

You can win an all expenses paid trip to see WEC 53 in Arizona. Check out www.bullz-eye.com/contests/2010/wec_phoenix-2.htm for more information and to enter the Hometown Takedown "Best Seat in the House" contest. Entries must be received by December 3.
