UFC 125 win gives Dong Hyun Kim confidence he can beat champ GSP

Prior to UFC 125, Dong Hyun Kim said he had one goal: to fight UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre.

Following a convincing win over Nate Diaz, the goal remains unchanged.

In fact, after outgrappling the grappler and earning the unanimous-decision victory, Kim is even more confident in his abilities to beat the champ.

UFC 125 RESULTS: Frankie Edgar retains title by split draw in classic war with Gray Maynard

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Frankie_Edgar_180_3.jpeg

The UFC's first main event of 2011 set the bar high for "Fight of the Year" consideration, as Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard battled it out in a classic war that ended in a split draw.

But this fight was nearly over before it began, as Maynard nearly finished the fight in the first round. He landed a right early that knocked Edgar down and sent him somersaulting backwards, but the resilient Champion tried to regain his bearings. Maynard, however, continued the assault, knocking Edgar down multiple times with hooks and straight punches, and landing shots on the ground as Edgar tried to grab a leg to recover. By the end of the round, Edgar had recovered enough to land a few punches, but the fact that he survived at all was the lasting impression.

According to the FightMetric stats for the fight, Maynard landed 47 punches in the first round as he attempted to put Edgar away. His failure to do so allowed the Champion to get back in the fight, and in a show of true heart and ability, Edgar did just that.

Edgar came out in the second round out-struck Maynard 21-6, but that wasn't the most surprising part of the round. Stuffing two of Maynard's takedowns during the round, Edgar actually managed to pick up the bigger, stronger Maynard and slam him to the ground.

This was one of the key differences between the two fights these two have had. In their first meeting, Maynard was able to control the fight with his wrestling. In this fight, Edgar stuffed almost every takedown attempt from Maynard, and in the process out-worked him on the feet as well. Not only that, but Edgar took Maynard down three times in the fight himself. It was an incredible performance that saw Edgar win the second, fourth and fifth rounds on two of the judges scorecards, while one of those judges also gave Edgar the third. The third judge gave Maynard the third and the fifth, which led to scores of 47-47 and 48-46 for each fighter.

The third round featured Maynard's most successful takedown near the end of the round, but Edgar countered with submission attempts, including a guillotine choke that was locked in as the horn sounded.

At any rate, the Champion retained his belt after surviving a vicious onslaught from the challenger in the first round. It was one of the more remarkable comebacks the sport has seen, and would have only been made greater had Edgar pulled out the victory at the end of the night. But the absolute classic battle will have fans clamoring for more, and it will lead to a much bigger rematch down the line.

Penick's Analysis: With so many people looking down on this matchup because of how the first fight went down, this one blew expectations away. It was incredible how Edgar was able to survive that beating from Maynard in the first round, only to come back and, in my opinion, win every round the rest of the way. The third round was really close, but I thought Edgar out-struck Maynard, and his submission attempts nullified the fact that he was taken down. For Maynard, he's going to have to deal with the missed opportunity of not being able to finish that fight in the first round with the beating he delivered. For Edgar, he put together a comeback for the ages and kept the belt around his waist.

K-1 DYNAMITE!! 2010 FULL RESULTS: Takaya defeats Fernandes, Aoki gets knocked out, Kawajiri dominates Thomson and more at NYE event

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

hdnet_logo_6.jpg

The annual New Year's Eve event from K-1 in Japan featured a title change, a DREAM fighter defeating a Strikeforce fighter, Alistair Overeem delivering a 19 second knockout, Shinya Aoki getting knocked out in a ridiculous special rules fight and much more.

In the main event of the show, Hiroyuki Takaya got revenge against Bibiano Fernandes to capture the DREAM Featherweight Championship. The two met in the finals of the very first DREAM Featherweight Grand Prix, a bout Fernandes took by split decision. After a 2-1 mark in between fights, Takaya upset Fernandes with a one sided decision victory.

The co-main event pitted Strikeforce's Josh Thomson against DREAM's Tatsuya "Crusher" Kawajiri. In another one-sided affair, Kawajiri dominated Thomson throughout their three round bout to earn the unanimous decision victory. The win solidified Kawajiri as one of the top representatives of Japanese MMA in the sport.

Jason High picked up a huge win on the card with a split decision win over longtime veteran Hyato "Mach" Sakurai. High dominated the action for much of the fight, but almost lost the bout in the final minute after being dropped by Sakurai. However, he won the bout on the judges' scorecards when he survived to the end of the round.

In other action on the card, Marius Zaromskis defeated Kazushi Sakuraba when Sakuraba's cauliflower ear exploded in disgusting fashion, prompting doctors to stop the fight. It was Zaromskis' first win in four fights after two losses and a no contest in Strikeforce in 2010.

Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem destroyed Todd Duffee, knocking him out in 19 seconds after stunning him with a knee to the gut. The win was Overeem's sixth straight in MMA, and he's now unbeaten in his last ten MMA fights.

In a special rules fight, DREAM Lightweight Champion took on K-1 fighter Yuichiro Nagashima. The fight was contested in two rounds, one a three minute K-1 rules round and the other a five minute DREAM rules round. Aoki made a mockery of the kick-boxing round, illegally clinching, throwing diving kicks and doing whatever he could to make it to the second round, where he'd be in his element under MMA rules. The line of thought into the fight was that if Aoki could survive to the MMA round, he'd take Nagashima down and submit him in quick fashion. However, Nagashima had other plans, and delivered a perfectly timed knee to the jaw at the outset of the round as Aoki rushed across the cage that knocked him out cold.

Former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi also picked up a big win on the card, though it wasn't in MMA. Mousasi took on dangerous heavyweight kickboxer Kyotaro in a K-1 rules bout, and pulled off the upset in a three round decision. En route to the win, Mousasi scored a knockdown in the second round.

Full results for the event are below:

Andy Ologun def. Kasuaki Furuki via unanimous decision.

Jason High def. Hayato "Mach" Sakurai via split decision.
Tatsuya Kawajiri def. Josh Thomson via unanimous decision.
Hiroyuki Takaya def. Bibiano Fernandes via unanimous decision

UFC QUOTABLES: Cain Velasquez discusses his shoulder injury, hopeful for only six month layoff

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

VelasquezCainTV_150.png

"[The injury] happened in the Brock fight. After the fight, I felt fine. Later that night, my body starting cooling down, and my shoulder was jacked up. I knew something wasn't right. I saw the doctor and got an MRI, and he said I had a torn rotator cuff. They said, 'We'll try to do rehab first. We'll rehab it for six weeks and see how it's going.' I did that, and finally when the six weeks was up, we had another MRI. The muscle was still torn, so that said, 'We've got to have surgery. The rehab didn't help it.' We tried to do it without surgery so I could get back as quickly as possible, but that didn't work, so we'll do the other stuff. ... I thought I was doing the right thing by trying to get the rehab done and get healthy that way and go ahead with training. I thought I was doing a good thing. It sucks. I definitely want to be as active as I can. I want to fight for the fans and everybody that wants to see me fight. I want to please you guys. It's hard, but it's part of the territory. People get hurt all the time. These things happen. You have to get surgery. This isn't my first surgery, so you've just got to do it, do what the doctors say and get back as soon as possible. [My doctor] said with this injury and getting surgery on it and everything else, the recovery will probably be around six months. It's a while, but hopefully I can come back 100 percent. It is what it is. I need surgery, and that's it. ... When I'm ready, I'll come back, and I'll fight."

-UFC Heavyweight Champ Cain Velasquez discusses his injury during a pre-UFC 125 fan Q&A in Las Vegas (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com).

Penick's Analysis: There is some question about six months being too optimistic with a shoulder injury, but hopefully that's all it's going to be. If he's able to return to action in six months, he should be able to fight in August or December. If an August return is in the cards and Junior Dos Santos wins a fight in the interim, the fight that was supposed to be coming this spring would be perfect for the UFC's return to Brazil at the end of that month. Clearly he tried to take care of this without needing the lengthy layoff and it just wasn't in the cards, but hopefully he doesn't suffer any further setbacks, as fans will want to see him back in the cage as soon as possible.
