Top 5 Reasons Why MMA Should Be Legalized In New York

Today, the UFC held an event  to once again state their case for the legalization of MMA in New York. It?s been a long and mostly fruitless battle up to this point, but many predict that that?s soon going to change. Personally, I?ve supported this initiative since day one and am continually proud to do [...]

UFC NEWS: UFC planning 2011 Fan Expo for July in Las Vegas, along with July 2 event at Mandalay Bay Events Center

The UFC is targeting another UFC Fan Expo in Las Vegas, along with their sixth straight July event in the city, during the July 4th weekend of this year according to a report from MMAJunkie.com.

Per the report, the organization is planning to book the Mandalay Bay Events Center, where next month's UFC 126 event takes place, for an event on July 2. That card could possibly serve as UFC 132.

The Fan Expo would be the third held in Las Vegas in conjunction with an event, following the debut of the expo prior to UFC 100 and last year's Fan Expo prior to UFC 114 in May. The organization has held similar expos twice outside of Las Vegas, in Boston and in London. The two day events feature seminars, clothing and equipment booths, autograph signings and much more.

This would be the second event at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in 2011 after only one event at the venue in 2010.

Penick's Analysis: The Fan Expo has been a hit for the organization thus far, drawing large crowds to all of the iterations with the exception of the London expo. But coming back to Vegas, on July 4th weekend, could make for a big version of the two day gathering. With how the UFC's spring schedule is working out right now, they could have a couple of titles available for defense during this weekend, so it should make for another in a series of really big fights for the organization.

Poirier cuts through the Grispi hype for a decision win at UFC 125

Dustin Poirier derailed the Josh Grispi hype train, beating him in a unanimous decision, 30-27 on all three judges cards at UFC 125 on Saturday night. Grispi had no answer for Poirier's stand-up, and his lack of experience in later rounds showed.

Poirier surprised Grispi in the first round, landing several striking unanswered combinations. He used a front kick both to create distance and to knock Grispi on the ground. Twice, when Grispi tried for a takedown, Poirier ended up on top. Grispi tried for a Kimura near the end of the round, but couldn't finish.

In Grispi's first second round since the Spring of 2007, Grispi attempted to take Poirier down and maintain control. He couldn't do it. Poirier moved to the top, pinned Grispi's arm down and landed short punches before letting Grispi stand up. Back on the ground, Grispi tried for a triangle choke. Poirier slammed Grispi off of his neck and then followed up with a strike.

Poirier utilized the clinch for much of the third round, landing knee after knee on the exhausted Grispi. He was able to get a takedown with less than a minute left, but he wasn't able to do anything to Poirier from the top position.

Grispi had been scheduled to fight UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo on ths card, but an injury sideline the champ. Grispi wanted to still fight on the card, and was given Poirier. Given the beating that Poirier put down, it was clear that Grispi was not the fighter to end Aldo's run.

Rhadi Ferguson Taps Out John Richard at Strikeforce: Challengers

by Michael David SmithRhadi Ferguson has a lot going for him in the eyes of Strikeforce: He has a Ph.D., a background as a judo Olympian, and a cousin by the name of Kimbo Slice. There's plenty for Strikeforce to promote there.

And now Ferguson also has a win in the Strikeforce cage, although it wasn't the most impressive one, a second-round submission against a low-level fighter named John Richard who actually hurt Ferguson at the start of both the first and second rounds. Ferguson did manage to make Richard tap out to a knee bar, but Ferguson admitted after the fight that he hadn't fought particularly well, giving himself a grade of D-minus.
