Georges St. Pierre says left eye will be fine, but still can't see after UFC 129 victory over Jake Shields (UPDATED)

Saturday night's bizarre main event between Georges St. Pierre and Jake Shields saw both fighters look perhaps the worst they have in any major fight either of them have had in recent memory.

Shields employed a confounding gameplan that didn't see him attempt to utilize his strengths at any point, while St. Pierre battled through an eye injury that had his game severely affected through the last three rounds of the fight. There was a definite worry that perhaps St. Pierre severely damaged the eye, and that it could be a potentially threatening injury, but those fears were allayed by the champ himself.

On Twitter early Sunday morning, St. Pierre said that after seeing the doctors his eye will be fine. However, he revealed he's still having vision problems.

"Hey everybody, leaving the hospital soon, just finished all my eye tests, I still don't see anything from my left eye but I'll be [fine]," St. Pierre tweeted, before thanking fans for their support.

Though there's been no further update than that, it's likely that he avoided any retina damage from whatever blow caused the problems for him during and after the fight.

Penick's Analysis: However it exactly happened, it was clear that the eye was a major issue for him on Saturday, and it allowed Shields to have more success on the feet than it otherwise would have. Still, Shields never seriously attempted to take St. Pierre down after failing on a single leg in the first round, and his decision to stand and kick box with St. Pierre for the entirety of the fight made no sense at all. It was a bad performance on both ends, but the good news here is that hopefully St. Pierre has avoided a serious injury with the eye, and hopefully he'll regain his full vision soon.

UPDATE: St. Pierre has added a couple of tweets with a little more information on the situation.

"Hey guys just want to say that I am ok," he wrote. "I'll need to see a doctor in the next days! Yesterday I was told it was not a retina problem. I am so lucky my BJJ instructor Bruno Fernandes is an [ophthalmologist]!!! I'll be in good hands!!!"

Randy Couture secure in his decision to retire after UFC 129 loss to Lyoto Machida

UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture has come to the end of his career, sent into retirement by a fantastic jumping crane kick from Lyoto Machida at UFC 129 in Toronto.

"The Natural" said prior to the fight that win, lose or draw the bout with Machida would be his last. Now that the fight has come and gone, Couture is content with that decision, and Saturday's result left him feeling secure in leaving the sport as an active fighter.

"There wasn't a sentimentality about it. There was kind of a sense of relief," Couture said on Sunday in comments made to Loretta Hunt at SI.com. "I felt like it was the right decision long before this and I felt more secure walking out that this is the right time and the right thing for me to be doing. There was no doubt in my head."

Machida's fight-ending kick caught everyone by surprise, and Couture said it wasn't anything he'd seen before, in practice or otherwise.

"It looked like he started to throw a front kick with his left leg and kind of jumped into that crane kick thing, which comes purely from karate," said Couture. "It wasn't anything I'd seen in practice ever. I don't think anyone's seen someone do that in an MMA fight."

"I thought it was a punch. With his front kick, he'll follow up with a punch almost at the same time. We were prepared for that, so I thought I'd missed that [combination]."

Because Couture has retired before, it will be hard for some to believe that he's actually done. However, Couture was emphatic that this was his last fight, and made it clear that, while the UFC may attempt to get him back, it's not in the cards.

"Definitely, it's the last fight," he said. "I know they're going to try to throw me something and get me to come back, but it's not going to happen."

Penick's Analysis: I fully believe Couture that he's done. He's got two movies lined up to begin filming later this year, and at 47-years-old it was clear on Saturday night that his time is over. Machida, 15 years his junior, was just on another level throughout, and hit him with a fantastic move not seen in the UFC before. Couture's mark on the sport has been made, and he'll have a place in the telling of UFC's history forever, but this 30th fight of his will be the last one, and I don't think the UFC will be able to convince him otherwise.

White vlog: ‘Santa’ Dana grants wishes

Canadians are faithful and creative MMA fans. A few thousand attended a Dana White Q & A yesterday at the Ricoh Coliseum in Toronto. They've learned from experience that if you ask Dana White for something, he may actually give it to you.

Multiple fans asked for a chance to go backstage during the weigh-in. It appeared that 28 of them got back there.

Another fan asked if he could sit next to the Octagon girls during UFC 129 - wish granted. And the most bold fan asked if he could come into the cage following the main event. He told White that he's great at eveything except putting the championship belt on, so the fan asked if he could put the belt on Georges St-Pierre after he beats "James" Shields. Clearly, he's a baseball fan. Jake is the fighter challenging GSP, James is a pitcher for the Tampa Bay Rays. White thought for a second and said yes. He confirmed it later in a short conversation with Joe Rogan (3:25 mark).

White and the crew give us a quick look at Rogers Centre with its configuration for the 55,000 tonight. A reporter, sitting in an SUV with White and owner Lorenzo Fertitta in the bowels of Rogers Centre, was scared to death when the sound in the arena was cranked up. White said it shook the car.

White also jokes while walking around the arena that he hopes no one presses "the button" to open the Rogers Centre roof. The stadium that used to be known as Skydome has a retractable roof. There is a giant four-sided scoreboard with HD screens hanging over the Octagon (8:05 mark)
