Frankie Edgar-Gray Maynard rematch could be re-booked for August or September UFC pay-per-view

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Frankie_Edgar_180_11.jpeg

Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard won't be out for an extended period of time, according to UFC President Dana White.

After news broke that Edgar and Maynard both dropped out of this month's UFC 130 event with injuries, White revealed during a media conference call that both fighters will only be out six to eight weeks and their rematch may be ready to go by this August or September.

The loss of that fight leaves UFC 130 with a light heavyweight bout between Quinton "Rampage" Jackson and Matt Hamill as the headliner for the May 28 event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In addition, a welterweight bout between Thiago Alves and Rick Story has been bumped up from the Spike TV Prelims to the pay-per-view broadcast.

If both fighters are able to go by early August, they could step into the main event at UFC 133 in Philadelphia. If it gets pushed back into September, it's likely to headline UFC 135 in Denver at the end of the month.

Penick's Analysis: If they can return early in August it would be a great headliner for 133 with Jose Aldo vs. Chad Mendes a possible co-main event. The good news is they're both likely out the same amount of time so they can put the fight together and keep the narrative in line in the lightweight division. It means Anthony Pettis is once again getting his promised fight delayed, but he simply needs to concentrate on doing what he can do, and that's going out and keeping himself in line with a win over Clay Guida next month. So while he may have to take a longer layoff between fights, he'd still be in line for the fight with a win.

Bellator adds MFC Champ Douglas Lima, Wand Fight Team's Michael Costa to welterweight roster

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Bellator Fighting Championships has put together a highly competitive welterweight roster over the last couple of years, and for season five they are continuing to add to it.

The organization announced this week the additions of Maximum Fighting Championships' Welterweight Champion Douglas Lima and Wand Fight Team Muay Thai instructor Michael Costa to their welterweight roster.

The 23-year-old Lima brings a six-fight winning streak into his Bellator debut, including three straight stoppage victories in MFC. Most recently Lima took out UFC vet Terry Martin by TKO in the first round at MFC 29 last month.

"In every promotion I've fought in, I've always wanted to be the best welterweight in the division - but with Bellator, this is it," said Lima. "This is a big organization and I'm going to be fighting on national television on MTV2. This is it for me, finally."

"I just really want to finish all of my fights. Every time I fight, I'm always looking for some way to finish. I don't like leaving my fate in the hands of the judges. If we stand up I'm going to try to knock my opponent's head off, and if we go to the ground, I'm good there too."

Said Bellator founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney on Lima - "Over the last two years, Douglas has taken his game to an entirely different level. Many considered him one of the top unsigned welterweights in MMA today. I'm very happy to say that he's no longer unsigned and that he will be fighting for Bellator. We continue to develop one of the strongest 170 lbs. divisions in the sport, and Douglas will be a fantastic addition to that."

Costa is a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai black belt who has been affiliated with the UFC's Wanderlei Silva for a long time, from the early days of the Chute Boxe Academy to an instructor for the Wand Fight Team. He has not fought very often as of late, but did win his last fight by TKO in the first round last November.

"Michael Costa has all the tools to have a breakout year and his no nonsense approach in the cage made him a perfect fit for Bellator," said Rebney. "His addition to our welterweight division makes a strong 170 lbs. class that much stronger."

"Anyone that has seen me fight before knows that I fight with all my heart, and that I fight to finish my fights by knockout," said Costa. "For me, fighting is a war. I want to finish all of my fights with Bellator so the fans remember my name."

"Now that I have this incredible opportunity with Bellator, I'm going to work harder than ever to make the most of it for myself, my fans, and my family. When people talk about Bellator, I want them to talk about Michael Costa. I want them to talk about me like they talk about Hector Lombard. I'm here to make a name for myself with Bellator, and that's what I'm about to do."

Lacy interview: Boxer not impressed with Diaz’s technical boxing

The Nick Diaz-Jeff Lacy fight may never materialize. Either way Diaz has struck a nerve in the boxing world. The MMA champion at 170 pounds has been asking for a boxing match against high level boxers for a year or so. Lacy stepped up and sounded insulted that Diaz, who is 1-0 as a pro boxer, would have the gall to call him out.

"I really don't understand what was going through his mind. I understand he may love a challenge [but] I'm up for this more than you would ever know," Lacy told ESPN1100 in Las Vegas. "I don't want to down talk the sport, I love MMA, but when you have people talking about it's taking away from boxing, no."

Lacy isn't impressed with the technical skills of most MMA fighters when it comes to their boxing.

"It's a 'Toughman' contest when they're striking. Two fighters standing up going blow for blow. That's not boxing. Boxing is not Toughman. You're using skill, dancing around what you can see, but can't hit."

Lacy got testy when he was told the pressure's on him.

"How would you figure the pressure's on me when this is something I've been doing all my life? It's somehting I can close my eyes and do," Lacy said. "There pressure's on him to step over, just like the pressure was on James [Toney] to step over to something he's never done before."

Lacy doesn't think Diaz can box with him.

"This is something I love to do, and I've dealt with way better technical fighters than this guy Diaz, is gonna present to me," Lacy said. "I've dealt with a lot of different styles. He's stepping into my ring, but it's gonna be tougher for me? I don't think so."

Lacy isn't worried about Diaz's chin and knows that the Strikeforce welterweight champ also cuts easily.

Check out the rest of the conversation as Dave Cokin and The Telegraph's Gareth Davies say Diaz has no shot of winning this fight. Davies said the fight won't last three rounds.

It may not come off at all if Diaz's ego is soothe by Zuffa management. When the news emerged that Diaz had signed a boxing bout agreement, his camp was quick to point out that it won't take the boxing match in October if the MMA star is given a shot at UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre.
