UFC 130 CONTESTS: Confidence Pick and Betting Game Results

UFC_130_poster_2_3.jpg

By Rich Hansen, MMA Torch Columnist:

Once again, I need to apologize for the delay on releasing the results to our contests. What you consider an insufferable delay, I merely call ?delaying the drama?. With no further ado?

CONFIDENCE GAME RESULTS

Long time player Shaun Louis tried valiantly to defend his Confidence Picks title against another long time player in Simon Kerry. Simon defeated Shaun by a score of 47-39 to become the new champion.

Shaun Louis: 39 points.

McDonald 10
Alves
Tibau 8
Rampage 7
Barao 6
Browne 5
Torres
Mir 3
Grove
Santiago

Simon Kerry: 47 points.

Rampage 10
Mir 9
Barao 8
Stann 7
McDonald 6
Struve
Tibau 4
Torres
Boetsch 2
Story 1

Simon Kerry?s first defense will be against ?Kubi? Tyson Kubas, who scored a very solid 51 points, only missing out on Thiago Alves for 4 points. The jerk beat me by 3 points. No hard feelings Kubi. But to everyone else, bet heavy on Simon next week at UFC 131 in Vancouver.

BETTING CONTEST RESULTS

The Betting Champion at UFC 130 was Danny Mellor. Apparently Mellor is allergic to fame, as he laid a goose egg, missing on all of his bets. As a result, challenger and MMA Torch Editor Jamie Penick is the new champion. Penick hardly set the bar high, as his only successful bet was $100 on Brin Stann, which paid $166.67. Um, congratulations on backing into the title, boss man.

Jamie will have a tough go next week, as he will be defending his title against, you guessed it, Kubi. Kubi more than doubled his initial $1000, and will now challenge for both the Confidence Picks and the Betting Game titles. Try and guess who will be named performer of the night.

CONFIDENCE GAME POOL:

We had 24 players for the UFC 130 Confidence Picks Game. Here is a breakdown on how many players picked each fighter on the UFC 129 card:

Tibau 26, Oliveira 0
McDonald 26, Caraiso 0
Barao 24, Escovedo 2
Stann 22, Santiago 4
Rampage 21, Hamill 5
Alves 21, Story 5
Torres 18, Johnson 8 - Whoops
Mir 8, Nelson 18 - Whoops
Browne 9, Struve 17 - Whoops
Grove 16, Boetsch 10 - Whoops

So MMA Torch consensus picks went 6-4. Now to individual results

Kubi: 51
Rich Hansen: 48
Mike Jansen, Jay Hurtubise: 44
Michael Roberts: 43
Christopher Moore: 42
Daniel Moore: 40

UFC reportedly looking to buy 60 percent stake of G4 network, Spike TV preparing to move on (UPDATED)

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

G4_logo.jpg

The UFC is in negotiations to wrest control of struggling video game network G4 from NBCUniversal, according to several published reports.

The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday reported that the organization is in talks to buy control of the network, which would give the UFC their own distribution platform, along with further partnership with NBC and Comcast.

A separate report from MMAFighting.com reveals that it's a virtual certainty the organization does not stay with longtime home Spike TV, and G4 is a very likely new home for UFC programming.

Spike TV officials are already preparing for a 2012 without UFC programming, which will likely include moving Bellator Fighting Championships from MTV2 - which is also owned by Spike parent company Viacom - over to the network. Bellator would likely also be moved back to a weekday timeslot so as not to compete with the UFC.

G4 is currently available in approximately 59 million homes, and is not currently on satellite provider DirecTV. Spike TV is available in 99 million homes, but it's likely the UFC's ownership in G4 would bring the channel back to DirecTV, and bring back a comparable viewing base.

Penick's Analysis: The UFC having an ownership stake in a network would be huge. This doesn't necessarily mean it would be rebranded the UFC Network, but they would certainly be able to fill the channel with UFC programming and be able to put events on at their own discretion with owning it. It would also probably be a part of a larger reaching deal with other Comcast and NBC-owned properties, including their current relationship with Versus (soon to be NBC Sports). Though the channel isn't available in as many homes right now, that is something that can be built upon, and the UFC can make sure to get the word out to their fans as to where they can find their programming. Nothing is close to being a done deal here, but this is looking very promising, and could be a huge next step for the organization.

UPDATE: The New York Times now reports that the UFC is looking to purchase a 60 percent stake in G4. There's no word on how much the deal would be worth at this stage, and again nothing has been completed, but representatives from the UFC and NBCUniversal met in New York on Wednesday.

Ferguson video: TUF 13 bad guy found a brother in Lesnar

It took a while for someone to emerge as the villain on Season 13 of "The Ultimate Fighter," but when it happened the back lash was hellacious for Tony Ferguson. The entire house turned on Ferguson, after his drunken attack Charlie Rader. Ferguson trained by himself and reached the final. Brock Lesnar, who knows all about being a polarizing figure helped the prospect through the fire.

With a guarantee six-figure deal up for grabs, Ferguson faces Ramsey Nijem tomorrow at the Palms in Las Vegas.

"You see Brock as the villain, but I got to see Brock and the one thing is, I don't look at him that way," Ferguson told RawVegas. "Brock was not intimidating to me at all. I have a bigger uncle who was kind of like him. So it was easier to deal with him. He was awesome from the get-go."

Ferguson bonded with Lesnar so much that he decided to work with the Death Clutch Gym, the former UFC heavyweight champ's camp in Minnesota. He was honored because as he said Brock doesn't tolerate just anyone. In spite of his transgressions, Lesnar trusted Ferguson just like his family did when he had to tell them about the drunken episode on TUF.

"My friends and my family know me for who I am. I had to look at myself and ask that. Before this episode aired, I was having a panic attack ... like 'oh, my mom and dad are going to be seeing this. Oh crap.'  They re-assured me that they know who I am," said Ferguson.

The 25-year-old knows he's a work in progress, but much of the effort could be sidetracked if he doesn't get the job done in the Octagon.

"The biggest concern is that I want little kids to look up to me. So I know I have a lot of work to do, but the first thing that's in front of me is beating Ramsey," said Ferguson.
